What this page teaches

This page introduces the 12-year profection cycle, shows how to find the activated house by age, and helps students identify the yearly time lord from the rising sign.

How annual profections work

One house per year

At birth, the 1st house is activated. At age 1, the 2nd house is activated. At age 2, the 3rd house is activated, and so on through the 12-house cycle.

The cycle repeats every 12 years

Age 12 returns to a 1st house year, age 24 returns to a 1st house year, age 36 returns to a 1st house year, and so forth.

The time lord matters

The ruler of the activated house becomes the time lord for the year and is one of the key planets to study in the natal chart and through transits.

Beginner translation

Profections tell you which part of life is taking center stage for the year. Then the ruler of that house becomes the main planet to watch.

Classical logic

Profections are simple to calculate, but the real depth comes from interpreting the condition of the time lord and the meaning of the activated house.

Common student misunderstandings

The activated house is the only thing that matters

No. The house sets the topic, but the time lord shows how that topic is likely to behave and where to look more closely.

You can use any rulership system and get the same result

No. For traditional profections, it is best to stay with traditional rulers so the technique remains internally consistent.

Profections replace every other timing technique

No. Profections work beautifully with transits, solar returns, and other timing methods. They help focus attention rather than replacing the rest of astrology.
