Discovery (1930):
Pluto was discovered on February 18, 1930, by Clyde W. Tombaugh, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The search for a ninth planet was initiated by Percival Lowell in 1894 due to perceived irregularities in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. Tombaugh's discovery was a result of many months of painstaking work, systematically capturing and comparing photographic plates.
Naming (1930):
The newly discovered planet was named "Pluto" after the Roman god of the underworld. The name was suggested by Venetia Burney, an 11-year-old schoolgirl in Oxford, England. She thought it was an appropriate name for such a cold, dark world. It was officially adopted on May 1, 1930.
Status as a Planet (1930-2006):
For most of the 20th century, Pluto was known as the ninth planet in our solar system. New Horizons Mission (2006-2015): NASA's New Horizons mission, launched in 2006, made a close approach to Pluto in July 2015. It sent back detailed images and data about Pluto and its moons, revealing a complex and interesting world with a variety of terrains, including mountains of ice, plains of frozen nitrogen, and a blue sky of thin atmosphere.
