An aspect is a specific angle between two planets. Each angle is a kind of conversation — a tone, a flavor, a relationship in motion.

The Conversations — Planet Pairs as Archetypes

When two planets aspect each other, they don't just touch — they have a relationship with its own mythology. Here is the cast of the biggest pairings.

What Is a Transit?

A transit is the current sky meeting your birth chart.

Your natal chart is a frozen snapshot of the sky at your birth — your inner blueprint. It doesn't change.

The transiting sky is what's happening overhead right now. The planets keep moving. They orbit. They form aspects to your natal placements.

When a moving planet touches one of your natal planets or angles, that placement activates. Themes light up. Timing emerges. Life feels like it's saying something.

Natal Chart

You at the moment of your first breath. Permanent. Your inner architecture.

Current Sky

What's Calling Your Attention Right Now?

Before we look at any chart — close your eyes for ten seconds and notice. What theme is loud in your life this month?

Career. Body. Identity. Relationships. Money. A creative project. A grief. A re-start. A "something's shifting" feeling you can't name yet. Whatever surfaces first — that's the doorway.

Write one sentence: The theme that's loudest in my life right now is…

We'll return to this sentence later when we look at the transits actually firing in your chart. The sky almost always agrees with the body.

Foundation 02

Why Everyone Experiences the Same Planet Differently

Saturn is in the sky for all of us. But Saturn is not doing the same thing to you and me.

The transiting planet is the same. What changes is:

  • Which house it's moving through in your chart (the life area being activated)
  • Which natal planet or angle it's contacting (the part of you being touched)
  • Which aspect it's forming (the type of energy — supportive, tense, electric, deep)
  • Where your natal chart already lives (your inner blueprint shapes the response)

This is why two people born the same year have wildly different Saturn Returns. The planet is shared. The chart isn't.

Aspects: The Type of Energy Involved

Aspects describe the quality of contact between the transiting planet and your natal chart.

☌ Conjunction · Merging ⚹ Sextile · Opportunity □ Square · Friction · Growth △ Trine · Flow · Support ☍ Opposition · Tension · Awareness

Hard aspects (square, opposition) bring pressure that creates change. Often the most growth-inducing — and the most uncomfortable.

Soft aspects (trine, sextile) bring support and opportunity. They feel good. They also pass by quietly if you don't take action.

Conjunctions are pure activation — the moving planet sits directly on a natal placement and amplifies it.

Guess the Transit from Real Life

I'll describe a life event. You guess which planet is most likely doing the work. We'll do these together — no wrong answers.

Scenario A

"I quit my stable job. I don't have a plan. I just know I can't keep doing it the way I was."

Hint: sudden, identity-disrupting, unmistakably "I had to."

Scenario B

"Everything is heavier. I'm being asked to grow up in a specific area. The pressure won't lift until I rebuild it correctly."

Hint: slow, structural, teacher-energy.

Scenario C

"Opportunities keep appearing. People are saying yes. I feel expanded and lucky — sometimes too lucky."

Hint: abundance, growth, can be too much of a good thing.

Scenario D

"Something deep is being excavated. I'm losing things that need to die. What rebuilds afterward is unrecognizable."

Hint: death & rebirth, the deepest cut.

Answers we'll discuss together: A → Uranus. B → Saturn. C → Jupiter. D → Pluto. Note which one matches a theme in your life right now.

Slow Planets vs. Fast Planets

Speed is everything. The slower the planet, the bigger the chapter.

Saturn~29 yearsStructure, maturity, mastery
Uranus~84 yearsDisruption, awakening, freedom
Neptune~165 yearsDissolving, mysticism, fog
Pluto~248 yearsDeath/rebirth, power, depth

Fast planets color your week. Slow planets define your decade.

The Major Cycles Everyone Lives Through

These transits time the chapters of a human life. Almost everyone meets them.

♃ Jupiter Return · ~12 years

A return of growth and faith. Around ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60. Doors open. Optimism returns. Worldview expands.

♄ Saturn Return · ~29 years

Around ages 27–30, 58–60, 87–90. Adulthood, on Saturn's terms. The rebuild that lasts.

⛢ Uranus Opposition · ~42

The "midlife awakening." Whatever isn't true gets cracked open. Often a turning point.

♇ Pluto Square · ~36–42

A deep psychological reckoning. What you've outgrown dies. Power returns to its rightful place.

♄ Saturn Opposition · ~14–15, 44–45

A halfway point in the Saturn cycle. Adjust the structures. Re-commit or re-route.

♆ Neptune Square · ~41–42

The veil thins. Old illusions dissolve. Spiritual hunger sharpens.

Map Your Major Transits — Then and Now

Look at the cycle ages above. Pick the one closest to your current age or a past age that was a major turning point.

Reflect: What was happening then? Did you change a relationship, a job, a home, a belief about yourself? What ended? What began?

Your turning point:

You're already feeling timing. The chart just gives you language for what you've been tracking all along.

How to Actually Track Your Transits

A workflow you can use every week.

  1. Know your natal placements. Especially your Sun, Moon, Rising, and the rulers of your 1st, 7th, and 10th houses.
  2. Run a bi-wheel. Your natal chart on the inside, the current sky on the outside. (Use the AIA chart calculator.)
  3. Look for slow planets making aspects to natal placements. Especially Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and the lunar nodes.
  4. Note the house the transiting planet is moving through. That's the life area lighting up.
  5. Note the aspect. Hard or soft? Exact or approaching?
  6. Watch the Moon. The Moon triggers slower transits — the day the Moon hits the same degree, the theme often surfaces.
  7. Write it down. A transit journal is the single fastest way to learn astrology.

Orbs: When Is a Transit "On"?

A transit doesn't switch on at exact degree. It builds and releases like weather.

Applying

The planet is moving toward exactness. The pressure or invitation builds.

Exact

The peak. Events often occur within days. Felt clearly.

Separating

The planet moves past. Integration, processing, learning what just happened.

Slow planets can sit within orb for months — and they often hit the same degree multiple times because of retrograde motion. That's why a big chapter has three "passes" — the meet, the reconsider, the resolve.

Current Sky

What's Activating in Your Chart Right Now

Together we'll look at the current sky and ask:

  • Which slow planet is currently moving through which of my houses?
  • Is it aspecting one of my personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars)?
  • Does the theme of that planet match what I wrote earlier in Activity 1?
Pair share: Tell the person next to you (or write here) — what transit do you suspect is most active for you right now, and what life theme it matches.

What You Can Actually Do With Transits

Transits aren't fate — they're timing. They reveal the terrain, not the choice.

Understand Current Life Themes

Name what's happening. Stop wondering if you're "broken" — you're being moved.

Work With Timing

Launch when the sky supports you. Wait when it doesn't. Decide with more information.

Use Hard Transits Wisely

The pressure has a purpose. Lean into the lesson and the transit shortens.

Plan Around Supportive Cycles

Jupiter and trines are real. Use them. Don't sleep through good weather.

Recognize Reflection Periods

Retrogrades and 12th-house transits ask for inner work, not output.

Build Self-Awareness

Patterns repeat on cycles. Watching one cycle teaches you the next.

Don't Do This

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Reading the sun-sign horoscope only. It uses your sun sign as a placeholder for your rising. Read your rising sign's horoscope; it's more accurate.
  • Treating a transit as fate. It's a pressure, an invitation, a flavor of timing. You still choose.
  • Ignoring the natal chart. A transit means nothing without the chart it's hitting. Always go back to the natal.
  • Watching only the day's exact aspects. Slow planets work over months. Zoom out.
  • Catastrophizing hard transits. Saturn and Pluto are teachers, not punishers. The growth is real.
  • Dismissing soft transits. Trines and sextiles are real opportunities — they pass quietly if you don't show up.

Your Three-Sentence Transit Read

Pull it all together. In three sentences, write your own beginner transit reading.

  1. The transit currently most active for me is _____ moving through my _____ house, aspecting my _____.
  2. The theme of this transit is _____.
  3. One way I can work with this energy in the next month is _____.

This is how astrologers think. You just did it.

The Aspect Relationships

Each angle has a tone. Each tone is the type of conversation.

A progressive guide. Start with the basics. Each level unlocks more of the tool.

✦ Beginner — What Is a Transit?

A transit is the moving sky meeting a moment frozen in time — usually your natal chart, or a historical event, or simply "now."

Think of the planets as long-running characters in a story. Each character has a voice (its archetype). When two characters stand at meaningful angles to each other, they have a conversation. That's an aspect.

The five conversations every beginner should know:

☌ Conjunction — Merging ☍ Opposition — Mirroring △ Trine — Flowing □ Square — Wrestling ⚹ Sextile — Inviting
Try this Open Today's Sky. Find the conversation that catches your eye. Read it aloud as a sentence: "Mars is wrestling with Saturn." That's it. That's the practice.

✦✦ Intermediate — Orbs, Applying, Separating

Aspects aren't binary. They build, peak, and release. The orb is how far the actual angle is from exactness — within a few degrees it's "in conversation." Closer to exact = louder.

Applying: the faster planet is moving toward exactness. Future-tense. Building.

Separating: it's moving past. Past-tense. Integrating.

The middle (orb = 0°) is the peak — the day the conversation lands hardest.

Try this In Today's Sky, find an applying aspect with a tight orb. That conversation is about to land. What might it be saying in your own life?

✦✦ Intermediate — Minor Aspects

Beyond the five majors, there are subtler tones — the quincunx (⚻, 150°) is the most useful. It's the "two things that don't fit" aspect. Things at quincunx can't see each other directly; they require adjustment, awkwardness, or a creative third option.

✦✦✦ Advanced — Mutual Reception & Triple Conversations

The richest sky moments aren't single aspects — they're configurations. Three planets in mutual conversation form a T-square, grand trine, yod, or kite. Look for moments when several aspects share a planet — that planet becomes the hinge of the moment.

Also watch for retrograde stations — a planet about to stop and reverse holds an aspect for weeks. Those aspects shape eras, not days.

Advanced Practice Pick a historical moment in the History Lab. Count how many aspects involve Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto. That number tells you how "loud" the era was structurally.

✦✦✦ Advanced — The Long Cycles

Slow planets meeting (conjunction) and dividing the sky (opposition) define generations. Saturn-Pluto, Jupiter-Saturn, Uranus-Pluto, Neptune-Pluto — these are the "world transits" that historians later name eras after. Find them in the History Lab.
