Archetypes in Astrology
A working laboratory for the depth astrologer. Study the faces of the psyche as they appear in the sky, name them, meet them, argue with them, and write down what they say. Nothing here is a horoscope. Everything here is a mirror.
What an archetype actually is
Most astrology books use the word "archetype" to mean "a nice word for keyword." That is not what it means. Getting this right changes how you read every chart for the rest of your life.
The three-part distinction
Jung insisted on separating three things that get collapsed together:

Why astrology and archetypal psychology fit together
Both assume the same thing: that the psyche is not a private production of one brain, but a shared field with recurring structures, and that those structures show up in patterned, readable form. Astrology gives the structures a coordinate system. Depth psychology gives them a consulting room.
Jung studied astrology seriously for decades and used it in clinical work, most famously in his 1949 astrological experiment on marriage, published in Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle. He treated the chart not as prediction but as a map of the psyche's own vocabulary. Read his letters and you find him blunt about it: he consulted the horoscope of difficult patients when he was stuck.
The three questions this station trains you to ask

As above, so below: the working frame
The phrase comes from the Emerald Tablet, a short Hermetic text of uncertain date that survives first in Arabic sources and reaches Europe through Latin translation in the twelfth century. It is two sentences long and it built an entire tradition.
Most people use it to mean "the sky causes things down here." That is the weakest possible reading and it is not what the Hermetic tradition meant. The stronger reading is correspondence, not causation: the same pattern is legible at every scale, so reading one scale teaches you the others.
The three-rung ladder
Every piece of work in this station moves through three rungs. Train yourself to do all three or you will keep sliding back into fortune-telling.
The literal placement. Planet, sign, house, aspect, degree, condition. No meaning yet. Just the geometry. Write it down cold.
The inner figure. Who is this in the interior world? What does it want, fear, refuse? What is its gift and its shadow contract? This rung is where the archetype lives.
The outer expression. Where does this figure walk around in the actual biography? Job, body, relationships, rooms, repeated arguments. The archetype is always already acting.
Four more Hermetic axioms worth stealing

The Archetype Library
Thirteen bodies, thirteen inner figures. Each card gives you the working name, the Jungian correspondence, the gift, the shadow contract, the somatic signature, and the question the figure asks. Shadow contract: the deal you unconsciously struck with this figure to avoid feeling something. Naming the contract is most of the work.
Sun
The Sovereign
The one who dares to be the centre and answer for it
Jungian correspondence: the Self, and the long project of individuation. Not the ego, though the ego keeps claiming the throne.
Coherence. A centre that other parts can orbit. The willingness to be seen and to be responsible for what is seen.
"I will perform a self so convincingly that nobody, including me, asks whether it is mine."
Somatic signature: heart, spine, upper back. Warmth or hollowness in the chest.
The question it asksWho are you when nobody is applauding and nobody is watching?

Alchemical stage: Rubedo, the reddening. The final integration where gold is not found but made.
Study prompt: List three roles you have been praised for. Which one would you keep if praise stopped tomorrow? That is the Sun. The other two are the persona.
Moon
The Keeper of the Hearth
The one who knows what you need before you do
Jungian correspondence: the Great Mother in both her nourishing and devouring aspects, plus the personal unconscious and the feeling function.
Instinctive attunement. Memory held in the body. The capacity to make a place feel safe without being asked.
"I will feed everyone so thoroughly that no one notices I was never fed, and I never have to say so."
Somatic signature: stomach, breasts, fluid balance. Tides of mood that arrive without a cause.
The question it asksWhat did you need at seven years old that you are still arranging your life to get?

Alchemical stage: Solutio, dissolving. The hard thing meets water and stops being able to hold its shape.
Study prompt: Track your mood at the same hour daily for one lunation. Do not interpret. Just record. Patterns you did not choose will surface by day nineteen.
Mercury
The Trickster at the Threshold
The one who carries messages and steals a little off the top
Jungian correspondence: the Trickster, and the psychopomp who escorts contents between conscious and unconscious. Jung called this figure Mercurius and gave him a whole volume.
Translation. The ability to move between worlds, registers, and vocabularies without losing the thread.
"I will be so quick and so clever that nobody gets close enough to find out what I actually think."
Somatic signature: hands, lungs, nervous system. Restlessness in the fingers, a mind that will not sit down.

Alchemical stage: Sublimatio, rising. The substance becomes vapour and gains altitude, gaining perspective and losing weight.
Study prompt: During the next Mercury retrograde, keep a log of what returns rather than what breaks. The Trickster is not sabotaging you; he is bringing back what you filed too early.
Venus
The Lover and the Valuer
The one who decides what is worth wanting
Jungian correspondence: Eros as the principle of relatedness, and for many charts the anima, the contrasexual soul-image that gets projected onto beloveds.
Discernment of value. Making beauty on purpose. The nerve to prefer one thing over another and say so.
"I will be so pleasing that I never have to risk being chosen for what I actually am."
Somatic signature: throat, kidneys, skin. The flush of attraction, the ache of the unreciprocated.

Alchemical stage: Coniunctio, the marriage. Two opposed substances agree to become a third thing.
Study prompt: Write the qualities of the person you most recently fell for. Now read the list as a description of an undeveloped part of yourself. Sit with the discomfort.
Mars
The Warrior
The one who knows where the line is and defends it
Jungian correspondence: the aggression instinct and, in many charts, the animus, the inner figure of directed will and argument.
Clean anger. The capacity to want something enough to act, and to protect what is yours without apology.
"I will never be angry, so my anger will leak sideways as illness, sarcasm, or accident."
Somatic signature: muscles, head, adrenals, blood. Heat, jaw tension, the urge to move.

Alchemical stage: Calcinatio, burning. The substance is reduced by fire to what will not burn.
Study prompt: Name the last time you were furious and said nothing. Where did the energy go? Follow it. It went somewhere.
Jupiter
The Meaning-Maker
The one who insists there is a larger story
Jungian correspondence: the Wise Old Man or Woman, the mana personality, and the psyche's transcendent function reaching for a bigger frame.
Perspective and generosity. The instinct that a situation is larger than its worst moment. Faith with evidence.
"I will make every difficulty mean something immediately, so I never have to sit in the part where it means nothing yet."
Somatic signature: liver, hips, thighs. Expansion, appetite, the feeling of room.
The question it asksWhat would you attempt if you believed the world was on your side?

Alchemical stage: Multiplicatio, increase. What worked once is made to work at scale, with all the risk that implies.
Study prompt: Identify one belief you hold that has never cost you anything. Interrogate it. Cheap faith is Jupiter's shadow wearing a robe.
Saturn
The Gatekeeper / Senex
The one who will not let you pass until it is real
Jungian correspondence: the Senex, the old king, the principle of form, limit, and time. Hillman wrote extensively on Senex and Puer as a single split pair.
Mastery through repetition. Structure that holds weight. The dignity of having earned it.
"I will never attempt it, so I can never be found insufficient at it."
Somatic signature: bones, teeth, skin, knees. Heaviness, cold, the ache of holding a position too long.
The question it asksWhat are you pretending to be ready for, and what would actually make you ready?

Alchemical stage: Nigredo, the blackening. Everything rots first. This is not a mistake in the process; it is the first step of it.
Study prompt: Map your Saturn returns and squares against your CV. The places where Saturn touched are almost always the places you are now competent.
Uranus
The Awakener
The one who sets fire to the arrangement you were comfortable in
Jungian correspondence: the Promethean impulse and the numinous shock that breaks an outgrown container. Individuation's rude interruption.
Sudden sight. The capacity to see the arbitrary rule for what it is and step out of it in one move.
"I will be so unpredictable that no one can build an expectation of me, and therefore no one can be disappointed."
Somatic signature: nervous system, ankles, electrical sensation. Jolts, insomnia, the body ahead of the news.

Alchemical stage: Separatio, dividing. What was fused is pulled apart so its parts can be seen separately for the first time.
Study prompt: Richard Tarnas argues in Prometheus the Awakener that Uranus is better named Prometheus. Test it. Read your Uranus placement twice, once as Sky God, once as fire-thief. Which fits your life?
Neptune
The Dissolver / Mystic
The one who removes the edges of things
Jungian correspondence: participation mystique, the oceanic feeling, and the seductive pull of unconsciousness that can be either union or drowning.
Compassion without a border. Imagination, devotion, and access to states that argument cannot reach.
"I will stay slightly unclear about everything, so I am never accountable for any of it."
Somatic signature: feet, immune system, pineal. Fatigue with no cause, permeability to other people's states.
The question it asksWhat are you refusing to see clearly because clarity would demand a decision?

Alchemical stage: Solutio, dissolving. Also Albedo, the whitening, when the rot is washed and something silver appears.
Study prompt: List your three most persistent idealisations. For each, name the ordinary human fact you are declining to notice. That is the Neptune tax.
Pluto
The Underworld Guide
The one who takes what you will not surrender
Jungian correspondence: the Shadow proper, and the nekyia, the descent to the underworld that Jung treated as a necessary stage of individuation.
Regenerative power. The nerve to look directly at what everyone else is politely ignoring, including in yourself.
"I will control the situation completely, so I never have to feel how it felt the time I could not."
Somatic signature: eliminative and reproductive systems. Compulsion, the sensation of something moving under the floor.
The question it asksWhat would you be if you lost the thing you are most defending?

Alchemical stage: Putrefactio into Nigredo. The corpse in the flask. Nothing useful happens until it does.
Study prompt: Write the story of your worst year as if it were a myth with you as the initiate rather than the victim. Notice which sentences you resist writing.
Chiron
The Wounded Healer
The one whose competence is built on the exact site of the injury
Jungian correspondence: the wounded-healer motif Jung named directly, arguing that only the wounded physician heals, and that the analyst's own wound is the working instrument.
Teaching from inside the difficulty. Credibility that cannot be faked because it was expensive.
"I will heal everyone else so thoroughly that my own wound stays permanently deferred and therefore permanently mine."
Somatic signature: the chronic thing. The old injury that flares in specific weather.
The question it asksWhere are you the expert precisely because it happened to you, and have you let it happen to you yet?

Alchemical stage: Mortificatio. The wound that will not close is the aperture the light gets in through.
Study prompt: Name what you teach or advise on. Now name the thing in your own life it maps onto. If the mapping is exact, you have found your Chiron. Sit down.
Black Moon Lilith
The Exile
The one who was sent away for refusing the arrangement
Jungian correspondence: the rejected feminine and the shadow anima. The part of the psyche that was disowned not for being bad, but for being ungovernable.
Uncompromised authenticity. The refusal to be small in exchange for being permitted.
"I will leave before I can be sent away, and call it freedom."
Somatic signature: pelvis, jaw, the low growl. What happens in the body when you are patronised.
The question it asksWhat part of you were you taught was too much?

Alchemical stage: Separatio into Fermentatio. What was cast out ferments in the dark and comes back stronger and stranger.
Study prompt: Note which of the three Liliths you are using: Black Moon (lunar apogee), Asteroid 1181, or Dark Moon Waltemath. They are three different objects and produce three different readings. State your choice in every reading you give.
North Node
The Unlived Life
The one waiting at the far end of the discomfort
Jungian correspondence: teleology. Jung insisted the psyche is not only pushed by its past but pulled by an unrealised future. The Node is that pull with an address.
Direction. A genuinely uncomfortable competence that only becomes available on the other side of practising it badly.
"I will keep getting excellent at the thing I am already good at, and call that growth."
Somatic signature: the specific nausea of the right decision.

Alchemical stage: Circulatio. The same material passes through the vessel repeatedly, refined a little each turn.
Study prompt: Compare true node and mean node positions in your chart. If they fall in different degrees near a sign boundary, decide which you use and never silently switch.
Ascendant
The Doorkeeper
The one standing in the doorway when the world arrives
Jungian correspondence: the persona, in Jung's precise sense: not a lie, but a necessary functional interface between the individual and the collective. It becomes pathology only when it is mistaken for the whole person.
A working interface. The style through which the whole chart negotiates entry into the world.
"I will identify so completely with the doorway that I forget there are rooms behind it."
Somatic signature: face, head, the body's first gesture on entering a room.
The question it asksWho do people think they are meeting, and how long does that last?

Alchemical stage: The vessel itself. Not an operation but the container all operations happen inside.
Study prompt: Ask three people who met you recently to describe their first impression in five words. Compare to your Ascendant sign. The gap between the two is where the persona is doing extra work.
Signs as archetypal postures
A sign is not a character. A sign is the style in which a planetary character operates. Treat it grammatically: the planet is the verb, the sign is the adverb.

Concrete scenes only. Jobs, rooms, repeated arguments, physical symptoms, the thing you always end up doing at parties.

Jung's core technique. Address the figure directly and write its reply without editing. Write the reply even if you think you are making it up. Especially then. Two voices, labelled.
One repeatable action that gives this figure legitimate work to do. Small, specific, and scheduled. Vague resolutions feed the shadow.
