Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn — From Neophyte to Adept

Welcome

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn

A structured educational guide to the Western Esoteric Tradition, from first principles to advanced magical practice.

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was founded in 1888 by three Freemasons and Rosicrucians: Dr. William Wynn Westcott, Samuel Liddell "MacGregor" Mathers, and Dr. William Robert Woodman. Drawing upon a set of encrypted papers known as the Cipher Manuscripts, they developed a comprehensive system of magical and philosophical instruction rooted in the Qabalah, Hermeticism, Astrology, Alchemy, Tarot, and Enochian magic.

This database is organized as a progressive curriculum. Each section builds upon the previous, arranged from foundational concepts through to advanced magical theory. Use the navigation above to explore by module, or begin the structured path below.

"The Hermetic Art is a true science; therefore would-be magicians must commit the rudimentary knowledge of the system to memory, just as if they were students of medicine or engineering."

The Grade System

Orders and Grades of the Golden Dawn

The hierarchical structure of the Order, mapped to the Qabalistic Tree of Life.

The Golden Dawn Order system is based upon a hierarchical structure in which certain knowledge is retained for students who have reached specific grades or levels of achievement in their esoteric training. The grades correspond to the sephiroth on the Qabalistic Tree of Life and carry elemental and planetary attributions. They are divided into three separate groups: the First or Outer Order, the Second or Inner Order, and the Third or Invisible Order.

First Order — Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn

The First Order represents the stage of purification and covers the elemental grades from Neophyte through Philosophus.

0 = 0
Neophyte
Below Malkuth
The candidate stands at the threshold. The grade of preparation, purification, and the first contact with the Light.
1 = 10
Zelator
Malkuth — Earth
The grade of Earth. The student begins the disciplined study of the Qabalah, the elements, and the physical world.
2 = 9
Theoricus
Yesod — Air
The grade of Air and the Moon. Studies in astrology, theoretical magic, and the Tarot begin in earnest.
3 = 8
Practicus
Hod — Water
The grade of Water and Mercury. Study of the Qabalah deepens; the magical implements are introduced.
4 = 7
Philosophus
Netzach — Fire
The grade of Fire and Venus. Philosophy, ethics, and the higher magical arts are studied. Completion of the First Order.

Portal Grade — The Second Degree

Between the First and Second Orders stands the Portal grade, a liminal state representing consecration and the crossing of the Abyss of the lower grades. It corresponds to no sephira but lies upon the path between Hod and Netzach.

Second Order — Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis (R.R. et A.C.)

The Second or Inner Order represents the stage of magical union wherein the magician works to align with the Higher Self. These grades are not given through public ceremony but are worked in the Vault of the Adepti.

5 = 6
Adeptus Minor
Tiphareth — Sun
The central grade of the system. Union with the Higher Self; work with the Vault of the Adepti and the Holy Guardian Angel.
6 = 5
Adeptus Major
Geburah — Mars
Advanced magical work; the creation of the Black Pillar and the deeper mysteries of the Elements and Planets.
7 = 4
Adeptus Exemptus
Chesed — Jupiter
The highest attainable grade in practice; preparation for the passage across the Abyss to the Third Order.

Third Order — The Invisible Order

The Third Order (Magister Templi 8=3, Magus 9=2, Illuminatus 10=1) is not attained by living initiates but belongs to the inner-planes contacts, the Secret Chiefs who inspire the Order from beyond ordinary human consciousness.

History of the Golden Dawn: A Timeline

From the discovery of the Cipher Manuscripts in 1887 to the modern revival, based on H.O.G.D. primary sources.

August 1887

The Cipher Manuscripts are discovered

Following the deaths of occult scholars Frederick Hockley and Kenneth Mackenzie, a set of papers written in encrypted code passed through the Reverend Woodford to Dr. William Wynn Westcott, Secretary of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. These came to be called the Cipher Manuscripts.

October 1887

The Manuscripts are decoded

Westcott found the key — a simple letter-for-letter substitution from Abbot Trithemius's Polygraphiae — and decoded the papers into plain English written right-to-left. Once revealed, the manuscripts outlined initiatory rituals and graded lessons in astrology, alchemy, geomancy, Qabalah, Tarot and Hermetics. Westcott then engaged Mathers to flesh out the curriculum, and brought in Dr. William Robert Woodman as the third co-founder.

November 1887

Contact with Fraulein Sprengel

Among the Manuscripts was an encrypted address for a Rosicrucian Adept, Fraulein Sprengel of Nuremberg. Westcott corresponded with her; she granted the 7=4 grade to the founders and authorized the establishment of a Temple in England.

March 1, 1888

Isis-Urania Temple No. 3 is chartered

The warrant of the Temple of Isis-Urania was issued, with Mathers as Praemonstrator, Westcott as Cancellarius, and Woodman as Imperator. The first initiate was Mina Bergson, taking the motto Vestigia Nulla Retrorsum. The Golden Dawn as we know it was born.

1889

Mina Bergson advanced to Adept; further Temples established

Mina Bergson was advanced to the nominal grade of 5=6 Adeptus Minor. Osiris Temple No. 4 at Weston-Super-Mare and Horus Temple No. 5 at Bradford were both established. Mathers and Mina Bergson were married by Reverend Ayton.

July 1890

Continental ties are broken

Westcott received a letter reporting that Fraulein Sprengel had died, and that the Continental Adepts would withdraw correspondence. The Order was now without its authorizing body.

Summer 1891

Mathers contacts Continental Adepts in Paris

Mathers traveled to Paris and reported establishing contact with Continental Adepts in the Bois de Boulogne, including Frater Lux E Tenebris. He received a new set of Cipher Manuscripts in French, which laid out the Second Order.

December 1891

The R.R. et A.C. is established; Dr. Woodman dies

From the French manuscripts, Mathers established the inner Second Order, the Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis. Annie Horniman became its first initiate into the full 5=6 grade. That same month, Dr. Woodman died suddenly, leaving no named successor within the Golden Dawn.

1893–1897

The Order at its height; notable members initiated

Florence Farr and W. B. Yeats were initiated into the Inner Order. The Matherses moved to Paris. The Order numbered among its members some of the most prominent artists, poets, and intellectuals of the Victorian era.

1900

The Revolt; Aleister Crowley and the crisis

Internal tensions over Mathers' autocratic leadership, his sending of Aleister Crowley to enforce his authority in London, and the authenticity of the Secret Chiefs led to the formal split of the Order. The majority of the Isis-Urania members voted to depose Mathers. The unified Golden Dawn as originally constituted effectively ended.

1900–1920

Successor orders and factions

Multiple successor orders emerged from the ruins: the Independent and Rectified Rite under Yeats, the Stella Matutina under Robert Felkin, A.E. Waite's Independent and Rectified Rite, and eventually Dion Fortune's Society of the Inner Light. Mathers continued to lead the Alpha et Omega in Paris until his death in 1918.

1937–1940

Israel Regardie publishes the complete system

Israel Regardie, who had served as Aleister Crowley's secretary and later joined Stella Matutina, published The Golden Dawn in four volumes, revealing the Order's complete curriculum to the public. This act, though controversial, preserved the tradition.

1977–present

Modern revival

Chic Cicero founded a new Golden Dawn lodge in the United States in 1977. He and Tabatha Cicero later received the blessing of Israel Regardie, who consecrated the Vault of the Adepti before his death in 1985. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Inc. continues this lineage today.
